Tips on Filing a 1040 Tax Form
If you are not using efile then the first thing you will need to do is use the peel-off label that has your name and address on the back of your tax book that was mailed to you. Make sure the label has your correct information. If the label information is incorrect, this may cause a delay in getting your refund. If you don't have a label, write in your name and correct address on the line of the 1040 form.
Your social security number will also need to be applied to the form, but make sure that your W-2 and 1099 form match your social security number.
Next you will need to file your exemptions. Single, married, head of household, or married jointly filing separate return or qualifying widow or widower with a dependent.
Before you use the standard deduction or itemize deductions to meet your tax needs you will add your wages, salaries, tips, all your taxable interest, taxable dividends and state refund from the previous year to get your adjusted gross income.
